With the mighty Sierra Nevada in the background and with the Almijara mountains just behind, Nerja is effectively protected from northern winds. Small houses, narrow alleys and almost completely free from high-rise buildings. Nerja is a town where steep cliffs and small beaches resolve each other in an idyllic little resort. Tourism has produced the best of the city without destroying the genuine. The largest and liveliest beach is called Playa Burriana and is a bit outside the city center. The most visited site is called Balcon de Europa, with views for all the weather and the sea just below. And then it's the caves - Cuevas de Nerja. Like a giant cathedral, like a still untouched scene from the story of the Ring. Cave paintings have been found that are probably over 20000 years old. The world's tallest stalachite, 63 meters, is in one of the caves, like a giant pillar stiffened in a movement. Occasionally concerts, from rock to flamenco, are played in the cave.
